There have been several efforts to attach wheels to the furniture, dating back to 530 BC when the Greeks attached wheels to a bed, creating the first known wheeled furniture. By 525 AD, the Chinese had fixed wheels to the chairs. An engineer Mr. Harry Jennings built first revolving steel wheel chair in 1932. That was the first wheel chair which is in use today. Jennings built that first wheel chair with his close friend Herbert Everest. They together monopolized the wheel chair in the market for many years. A justice had an issue of antitrust with both friends and charged the company with rigging on the prices of wheel chair. Ground swell also designed a wheel chair model in 1869. It was the model of rear push wheels. Swell introduced tri cycle chairs, hand cranked models of wheel chairs and rocking chairs also.
The contemporary wheelchair began to get shape in the late 19th century to early 20th century with the advent of push rims for self-propulsion in 1881, and wire spooked wheels replacing wooden ones in 1900. The most current two decades have seen the development in the modern wheelchair accelerate. Wheelchairs of this era are lighter and work better than ever before. There are now lots of possibilities available to get better ride on a wheel chair, from suspension systems which help to get rid of vibrations and jerks, to ultra-light body weight allowing better performance, to special designs and sizes for every individual’s necessities and choice. Wheel chair is widely used all over the world by old and disabled people for going from one place to another.
